Abstract
Global online platforms, such as Video on Demand (VOD) services, have become major enablers of global flow of cultural contents. This chapter explores the challenges that global platforms, such as VOD services, pose for the regulation of cultural industries. It analyses the multifaceted strategies developed by transnational VOD platforms, highlighting the evolution of the relationship between EU institutions, VOD services and the audiovisual industry. In addition, the chapter deals with the debates within UNESCO in order to align the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions with the development of streaming platforms. Finally, it highlights the importance of the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) as new normative landmark, influencing the governance of online platforms and culture in Australia, Mexico and Canada. As such, this chapter explores platformisation as a key driver for rethinking cultural governance in national and regional contexts.
