Cet article se propose de revisiter la riche synonymie spleenique (tristesse, regret, nostalgie, mélancolie, ennui, spleen, guignon, fatigue, lassitude, langueur, angoisse, névrose, pessimisme, désespoir, dépression), afin de voir comment elle peut être attachée à un roman du XXIe siècle et à une tranche d’âge spécifique, la vieillesse. Le dernier des Snoreaux a été publié en 2019 par l’écrivaine canadienne aux origines libanaises Abla Farhoud ; comme le titre le suggère, le roman surprend une fratrie, dont le seul frère, Ibrahim Abou-Snobara dit le Snoreau, se meurt à l’hôpital. Après une première crise subie à l’âge de dix-huit ans comme conséquence d’un deuil inaccompli pour son frère mort dans un accident, sa vie sera composée de séjours en hôpitaux ou en prison, jusqu’au présent de la narration où il est vieux et très malade. Parler de la condition humaine se fera en empruntant les esthétiques des grands poètes spleeniques du XIXe siècle français afin de démontrer comment l’ontologique (la finitude de la condition humaine) peut être sublimée grâce à l’esthétique en oeuvre littéraire.
