Abstract
In “Tandy,” Sherwood Anderson illustrates the process through which the young man visiting Winesburg experiences William James’s “metaphysical revelation,” the spiritual awakening necessary for the psychic change toward sobriety. The young girl becomes Tandy, the reification of the young man’s demand for love. This interpretation demonstrates how the metaphysical revelation inspires in the young man the God-consciousness that will empower him to stop drinking.
