As cheias, ou elevações significativas do nível d’água de um rio, são fenômenos que podem ser deflagrados tanto por precipitações de longa duração como pelas intensas de menor duração. Em rios onde se pretende construir ou existam usinas hidrelétricas, por questões de segurança das barragens, é comum a adoção da cheia decamilenar como vazão de projeto para o dimensionamento de vertedores. O presente artigo analisou as decamilenares estimadas nos locais do Complexo Energético Rio das Antas e nos trechos do médio e baixo do rio. Os resultados alcançados são díspares quando comparados com os definidos pelo Agente de Geração. O artigo conclui pela recomendação da revisão das vazões de projeto dos extravasores do Complexo Energético Rio das Antas, com destaque especial ao vertedor da UHE Castro Alves.
