PDF | Quartzo e caulinita são dois importantes silicatos que se apresentam como ganga em depósitos de minério de ferro. Neste trabalho discutiram-se, a partir de testes de microflotação, as principais diferenças entre a flotação de quartzo e de caulinita. Os testes de microflotação foram realizados com quatro coletores: duas aminas (dodecilamina e Flotigam EDA) e dois sais quaternários de amônio (brometo de cetiltrimetilamônio e cloreto de cetilpiridina). Os resultados indicam dois pontos cruciais: primeiro, o quartzo responde melhor à ação dos coletores em concentrações mais baixas e, segundo, a cinética de flotação da caulinita é muito mais lenta do que a do quartzo. O segundo ponto é o mais crítico, uma vez que a baixa velocidade de flotação da caulinita pode acarretar em perda de seletividade no processo, prejudicando a excelência da operação.
