Os conhecidos parágrafos iniciais do Prefácio de 1964 de Os parceiros do Rio Bonito recuperam o processo de mudança de objeto, do cururu para a sociedade caipira, que teria se consumado no fim do primeiro semestre de 1953, como indicam anotações no esboço da tese interrompida, intitulada inicialmente Poesia popular e mudança social e depois Poesia popular e estrutura social. Ainda no Prefácio, Antonio Candido informa que teria começado a redigir a nova tese em agosto de 1953 e que a teria concluído em setembro de 1954. Tais dados sugerem que Os parceiros foi escrito em apenas um ano, informação que pode escapar ao leitor. A defesa ocorreria um mês depois, em outubro de 1954.
