Le monastère est un lieu crucial dans la recherche de Foucault : il est le point de rencontre entre la généalogie de la gouvernementalité, l’histoire de l’aveu et l’herméneutique du sujet. L’expérience cénobitique constitue un paradoxe pour l’enquête foucaldienne ; Cassien en est la figure centrale. Une relecture de ses écrits permet d’identifier un foyer de tensions entre obéissance, ascèse et mystique. On propose l’hypothèse que l’obéissance n’y est pas seulement un état d’arrachement du vouloir et une domestication de l’ascèse, mais un point d’appui pour une discipline des vertus. La subjectivation ascétique n’y est pas séparable d’un confiant abandon.
