Cet article s’intéresse à la cinquième langue helvétique étrangement absente des mythologies officielles : le francoprovençal, langue romane présente dans l’espace jurassique et savoyard, dont la survie est en jeu. Présentant ce domaine linguistique, non unifié malgré des essais dans les années 1990, l’auteur montre comment cette situation entrave l’écriture dans cette langue qui paradoxalement est intégrée dans la production des écrivains… mais en français. Ainsi Maurice Chappaz et Jacques Chessex font apparaître en filigrane cette aire culturelle, ont recours à des francoprovençalismes ou entrelardent leurs textes de termes de patois et soulignent par là même la qualité d’espace intermédiaire et de communication qu’elle représente.
