Abstract
Medical certificates of insanity were legal documents that officially declared an individual to be of “unsound mind” and a “proper person to be detained”. Historians have seen certificates of insanity as important sources for archival research. However, they have made scant reference, if any, to the circulation of certificates around the globe. Despite their legal power, extension, and longevity, lunacy certificates have been treated as a tangential element of the asylum period. There has been no book on the topic, and only two publications have included the word “certification” in their title. This oversight is especially surprising if one considers the pervasive and powerful nature of medical certificates of insanity.
