"So, I Stayed:" Narratives of Agency from Punjabi-Canadian Women in Forced Marriages

Abstract
Moving away from dominant culture-based explanations of forced marriage which categorize women remaining in their marriages as victims, this thesis investigates the complex ways Punjabi-Canadian diasporic women practice agency and restructure oppressive systems while staying in their transnational forced marriages.Through integrating debates in postcolonial theory and feminist standpoint theory and employing qualitative research methods, this study uses semistructured interviews and leverages Indigenous pedagogy (i.e., storytelling) to provide space for Punjabi women to speak to their own experiences rather than be spoken for.In doing so, this research offers an account grounded in the vernacular model of embodied subjectivities, kin and social attachments, diasporic networks, and structural relations of power in public and private spheres, thus shedding light on women's complex decision-making strategies and experiences when remaining in their forced marriage.v Table of Contents Abstract…………………………………………………………………………………………….
