Static Metasurfaces Reflectors with Independent & Complete Control of Magnitude & Phase
Bibliographic record
Abstract
The ability to completely control scattered electromagnetic fields provides a myriad of opportunities for various unique and complex metasurface designs. The need for unique surface applications is essential in the realm of wireless communication; where the move to millimeter wave (mmwave) frequencies has caused a transition from multipath omni-directional communication to a directive line of sight communication (LOS).This change to directive communication provides an opportunity to improve signal coverage and throughput via engineered areas. These engineered areas using metasurface designs to direct the beam or provide different beamwidths, or even absorb signal in undesirable areas could provide large advantages in comparison to a non-engineered room. This thesis presents a static coupled resonator design capable of near complete control of the complex reflectance, designed in the Ka-band with no lumped elements. The unit cell (UC) design is examined and demonstrated in several different surfaces, such as a multi-beam steering surface, capable of directing two different beams of different relative magnitudes and also having different beam-widths, and surfaces capable of producing a single beam output with varying magnitudes, from almost complete reflection to absorption. These designed surfaces are measured and verified in a custom designed far field measured setup capable of measurements in the Ka-band.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
