Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

North American bird populations have declined considerably over the past fifty years.Given that many small mammals are nest predators, the reproductive success of birds could have been negatively impacted if small mammal populations have increased. To assess the likeliness that large-scale bird loss could be partly attributed to increased predation pressure by small mammals, we collected small mammal abundance datasets across North America to evaluate a general population trend using a Bayesian Hierarchical Model. Our model produced a population trend estimate for each speciessite combination time series, which informed general estimates for each species, and subsequently an overall estimate across all species. The model estimated an annual overall decline of 3.6% in small mammals across all species and sites, indicating that nest predation by small mammals is unlikely to largely contribute to North American bird declines.Subsequent research should evaluate the causes of North American small mammal decline.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
