Abstract
Margaret Sarkissian is Chair and Professor of Music at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts. Her research has focused primarily on the Malaysian-Portuguese and Baba-Nyonya (Straits-Chinese) communities of Melaka (Malacca), Malaysia, though she has also explored Armenian diasporic communities in Toronto and Chicago and Islamic popular music in Malaysia. In addition to many published articles, she is the author of D’Albuquerque's Children: Performing Tradition in Malaysia's Portuguese Settlement (University of Chicago Press, 2000) and Kantiga di Padri să Chang (CD and booklet, Tradisom, 1998). With Ted Solís she co-authored the book Living Ethnomusicology: Paths and Practices (University of Illinois Press, 2019), which includes 50 biographical interviews with a broad range of ethnomusicologists. When in Malaysia, she plays accordion with the 1511 O Maliao Maliao Cultural Troupe.
