Abstract
L’auteur remet en question la notion que les societates publicanorum de la République romaine, qui ont souvent été présentées comme étant un équivalent antique de nos sociétés par actions publiques modernes, avaient un grand nombre d’actionnaires et que leurs actions étaient achetées et vendues par l’intermédiaire d’une Bourse ou d’un réseau de courtiers. Elle examine les éléments de preuve républicains disponibles, incluant certains textes d'auteurs anciens n'ayant pas été discutés par ses prédécesseurs relativement à cette question, et elle propose également de nouvelles interprétations d'autres textes anciens qui étaient déjà inclus dans la discussion des experts à ce sujet. Elle conclut qu’il n’y a aucun élément de preuve confirmant qu’il existait une Bourse ou un réseau de courtiers sous la République.
