Abstract
Un libelle est un mot venant du Xe siècle : « libel », « libele », ou « libeau », avec une définition originale de « petit livre ». Le mot se développe au XVIe siècle et acquiert son sens « diffamatoire » (Furetière). L’écriture des libelles devient une vogue au XVIIe et reste en plein essor au XVIIIe siècle : le public veut réagir et avoir un impact dans les débats soulevés par ces écrits. Deux écrivains, Marie de Gournay (1565-1645) et M. de Voltaire (1694-1778) s’inscrivent contre la calomnie. Dans cet article, nous analysons la définition du libelle ainsi que les motivations de ces deux écrivains pour dénoncer la diffamation. Surtout, nous explorons si les deux évitent calomnier, ou s’ils calomnient à leur tour malgré tout, à travers l’analyse de ce que Marie de Gournay a écrit dans Marie de Gournay : Textes relatifs à la calomnie : Textes établis, annotés et commentés par Constant Venesoen (1998) et les deux textes de Voltaire abordant le libelle : son Épître XLI (1733) et le Sentiment des citoyens (1764).
