Dans ce numéro des Pages du laa, Jean Stillemans interroge les rapports d’instauration réciproque qu’entretiennent l’architecture et les êtres humains. Inversant la perspective courante selon laquelle les êtres humains sont les producteurs des ouvrages architecturaux, il envisage l’incidence que ces derniers ont sur les premiers.L’auteur soutient la thèse suivante : l’architecture participe, au même titre que le lan-gage et l’image, à l’instauration d’une coordonnée anthropologique, à savoir : l’espace à trois dimensions. Si le langage déploie une dimension, celle de la chaîne signifiante, et si l’image en développe deux, celles du plan de projection, l’architecture instaure simultané-ment trois dimensions qui divisent l’espace naturel et dotent celui-ci d’un aplomb, d’une assiette et d’une profondeur. L’opérateur de cette division est le « trièdre architectonique » caractérisé par la rencontre de trois faces orthogonales, qui préfigurent les plans sans épaisseur d’un trièdre géométrique. Si la présence du trièdre architectonique est obser-vable dans de nombreux édifices, elle se manifestede manière radicale et explicite dans les oeuvres de Theo van Doesburg et de Mies van der Rohe. Ainsi, la fonction anthropolo-gique de l’architecture est-elle moins d’envelopper le corps et de conforter son unité com-pacte que, par l’effet du trièdre architectonique, de l’écarteler, de l’étendre cruellement, selon trois dimensions.
