Ao analisarmos o verbete “Economia política” (1755) de Rousseau ressaltamos a importância do até então ineditismo do conceito da vontade geral na obra do genebrino. Pela primeira vez esta ideia basilar, do pensamento político de Jean-Jacques, ganha contornos. Ainda, nesta época, bastante influenciado pela filosofia de Diderot, em especial, por seu artigo “Direito natural”, Rousseau mostra como a vontade geral é o centro de sua economia política. No entanto, como iremos perceber no verbete, o genebrino desenvolve, em relação ao seu contemporâneo, suas próprias noções da concepção em questão afastando-se gradualmente das ideias de seu parceiro. Nosso propósito, neste estudo, é mostrar, no escrito mencionado, o que é a vontade geral para Rousseau. Para tal, dividimos esta pesquisa em três partes: na primeira, discorremos brevemente sobre a volonté générale no artigo de Diderot; na segunda, analisamos a noção da vontade geral no verbete de Rousseau; e, por fim, mostramos a ingerência de Diderot sobre Rousseau acerca do conceito da vontade geral.
