Abstract
Los objetivos del presente trabajo son editar el texto del sacerdote e ilustrado canario José de Viera y Clavijo titulado El labrador y contextualizarlo en la producción literaria del autor mediante un análisis comparativo de este. Se trata, concretamente, de un manuscrito autógrafo que contiene una imitación o traducción de un pasaje del libro II de las Geórgicas virgilianas y que hasta ahora había permanecido inédito en las baldas de la Biblioteca Municipal de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, como tantas de sus obras, que se están editando en la actualidad. Con su edición, pretendemos dar a conocer una obra notable del corpus de las traducciones o las imitaciones del polígrafo, que representa, sin duda, uno de los mayores de su producción. El análisis nos ha permitido concluir que se trata de un caso muy particular, pues la mayoría de las obras que bien traduce, bien imita, son de origen francés. Aunque Viera tuviera un gran dominio de las lenguas clásicas, sus traducciones directas del latín no llegaron a la decena y esta imitación bilingüe, constituida por más de ochenta versos, es, con diferencia, las más larga que se le conoce.
