Abstract: IN718 is a Ni-based superalloy typically manufactured by casting and/or forging. However, more recently, parts have been produced using additive manufacturing (AM) technologies. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy depend on the AM process parameters, such as laser power, scanning speed, beam size, and powder feed rate, among others. Consequently, element segregations and unusual stable and metastable phases form in the as-printed condition. This work presents a computational and experimental study of the type, morphology, chemical composition, and quantity of precipitates, as well as the phase transformations in IN718 encountered during the Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) process. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) techniques were employed to obtain thermodynamic, chemical, and microstructural information necessary for the thermodynamic calculations to understand phase transformations during the high heating and cooling rates conditions encountered during the PBF process.
