Abstract
Abstract: Over the past decade the role of mechanics in plant growth has been studied anew in conjunction with emerging imaging techniques. Turgor pressure deforms the rigid walls of plant cells which leads to the appearance of mechanical stresses in these walls. The pattern of these stresses has been shown to interact locally with gene expression in the cell, notably allowing local plastic deformations and therefore cell growth. While such stresses can be approximated in isolated cells with simple shapes, rules governing stress patterns in tissues are still unknown.
