Effect of single and double austenitization on the microstructure and themechanical properties of cold work tool steel

Abstract
With the aim of improving the combination of strength and impact toughness, a new designed multi-step austenitization heat treatment has been developed and the effect of conventional Single Austenitization (SA) and Double Austenitization (DA) treatments on microstructure characteristic and mechanical properties has been studied for a modified A8 cold work tool steel by means of dilatometry.Microstructures were characterized using Laser confocal Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy.Mechanical properties were tested in terms of hardness.The steel in the SA condition had an average prior austenite grain size (PAGS) of 12 m.DA treatment resulted in a homogenous microstructure consisting of tempered martensite and a lesser PAGS of 6 m with an improved area distribution of finer carbides.DA promotes carbide dissolution by taking more alloying elements into solution during the first step of autenitization, and at the same time controls the grain growth during the second step of austenitization.As a result, a finer microstructure is obtained with minor changes in microhardness values.
