Abstract
Par un saisissant contraste avec sa mise hors récit dans Histoire de ma vie, la Révolution française est le sujet de nombreux textes rédigés par Giacomo Casanova entre 1789 et sa mort en 1798. Ces essais mettent en forme une pensée politique conservatrice et profondément hostile à la Révolution et aux principes sur lesquels celle-ci s’est érigée. Rédigés par Casanova en 1794, le « Raisonnement d’un spectateur sur le bouleversement de la monarchie française par la Révolution de 1789 » et les « Réflexions sur la Révolution française » présentent une méditation sur la causalité à l’oeuvre dans la rupture révolutionnaire. L’analyse de Casanova passe en revue les causes premières et secondes de ce grand événement en insistant sur la contingence qui se manifeste dans les affaires humaines. Mais alors qu’il s’efforce de créer une théorie cohérente des causes ayant mené à la Révolution, Casanova aboutit à des conséquences aporétiques qui soulignent la rationalité inconnaissable agissant dans les phénomènes historiques comme dans ceux de sa propre vie.
