Abstract
Le développement de la forme romanesque entre le xiie et la fin du xiiie siècle correspond à la période que les historiens de l’économie appellent la « révolution commerciale » (950-1350). L’espace occupé par la fiction dans l’essor de l’économie monétaire ne résulte pas seulement de cette coïncidence chronologique. Les nouvelles valeurs de cette économie plus monétarisée reposent sur la confiance accordée à une fiction qui s’incarne dans l’opposition entre monnaie réelle (le moyen de paiement) et monnaie imaginaire (la monnaie de compte). Qu’il s’agisse de formes brèves (le fabliau), de l’excroissance d’une fable animalière ou allégorique (le Roman de Renart), ou d’un roman d’amour et de chevalerie, comme ceux de Chrétien de Troyes, il s’agit toujours de fiction. La fiction médiévale se rapproche ainsi d’une monnaie fiduciaire qui repose sur la confiance de l’acheteur envers l’émetteur, ici la confiance de l’auditeur-lecteur à l’égard du romancier.
