The design and testing of a prototype gridded ionization chamber for the detection of alpha decay is presented. The detector is intended to function as a test of amplification circuitry, high voltage supplies, gas handling equipment, and a waveform digitizing data acquisition system from which the energy and one of two spherical angles of emission can be reconstructed. The detector performed as expected and charge flow through the ionization and collection regions of the chamber is clearly visible. The waveforms are processed using a piecewise cubic spline and linear fit algorithm such that data analysis can be performed.
