Abstract

ur aim with this collection, Performing Turtle Island, is to open up discussion around Indigenous theatre and performance practices, considering current work by artists and scholars from a multidisciplinary perspective. Understanding Indigenous cultures as sovereign and living histories of knowledge, meaning, and identities, we see that the practices represented here are also profound opportunities for community engagement, education, and creative expression. Delving further, this anthology examines how Indigenous artists shape the aesthetic and theatre-related forms that we use to construct and represent land, community, and both Indigenous and Canadian identities. Now, more than ever, it is time to reflect on the images of Indigenous peoples in Canadian theatre and performance, and we hope this collection adds to previous scholarship on the subject.
