Abstract
Quelle est l’expérience vécue des aînés immigrants « racialisés » (AIR) confrontés à leur institutionnalisation dans les CHSLD (centre d’hébergement de soins de longue durée) ? Des entretiens semi-structurés ont été réalisés auprès des AIR et leurs proches dans trois CHSLD du Québec. Selon les participants, l’institutionnalisation s’articule autour de trois dimensions. Une dimension spatiale, traduisant une forme d’exclusion à l’égard des aînés ; une dimension émotive, décrivant des émotions s’accompagnant de souffrances psychologiques ; et une dimension temporelle, perçue comme un mode de vie en CHSLD caractérisé par la monotonie, la routine et l’ennui. Les représentations pouvant influencer notre rapport au monde, les représentations pré-institutionnalisation ont une incidence sur le rapport qu’entretiennent les AIR vis-à-vis de l’institutionnalisation.
