Abstract
L’élection de l’Unité populaire de Salvador Allende et le coup d’État qui l’a renversée le 11 septembre 1973 ont profondément marqué la gauche québécoise, particulièrement la gauche péquiste, que l’expérience chilienne interpellait vivement. Dans sa phase d’espoir, le Chili d’Allende est une source d’inspiration immense pour le projet de socialisme et d’indépendance porté par l’aile gauche du Parti québécois (PQ). Après le renversement brutal d’Allende, le rêve chilien se transforme néanmoins en cauchemar. Les adversaires conservateurs du PQ se serviront de la tragédie lors des élections provinciales d’octobre 1973 et déclencheront par le fait même des débats fortement assombris par le spectre du Chili. Au cinquième congrès du parti, René Lévesque, soutenu par l’ « argumentaire chilien » de Claude Morin, parvient à faire inscrire dans le programme du PQ la tenue d’un référendum obligatoire. Cette victoire de l’étapisme est un coup dur pour l’aile gauche péquiste, une défaite dont elle ne se remettra jamais véritablement.
