Abstract
T he purpose of the traditional land use study that forms much of this book was to collect, record, and protect information about historical and current traditional land use activities, as well as the cultural traditions of Carry The Kettle First Nation (cTk).In addition, one of the goals was to present a fuller, updated description of the history of the First Nation, particularly the precontact occupation of Saskatchewan followed by trade-induced migrations.The book presents the devastation caused by the loss of the bison herds, the effects of the creation of the international border, and the appalling treatment of the Nakoda People by the American and Canadian governments.Two major data collection methodologies were used.The historical and anthropological data were obtained primarily through the research of Dr. David R. Miller, who has spent a major portion of his professional career researching and accumulating information on the history and prehistory of the Assiniboine People.This publication would not have been possible without his participation.The second source of data was the interviews with Elders, who spoke about their history, their historical and current patterns of land use, as well as their cultural practices and language.We expect that the maps and data presented here will enhance the processes of consultation required for governments and industry and for the First Nation to protect its constitutional, Treaty, and Indigenous Rights.The book can also be utilized to strengthen and enhance further
