Abstract
Abstract Archives constitute a critical component for repressive governments to exercise their dominion and violence against peoples within and seeking to enter their borders. Likewise, people in contestation with the dominion and violence of states rely on archives as modes of resistance. This produces a paradox. How, on one hand, do governments construct archives to constrict populations and how, on the other, do those same populations construct counter-archives to subvert the means of their constriction? This chapter examines this seeming paradox through a more targeted query on the ways in which archives as social processes and technologies factor not only into the punishment paradigm but also in relation to abolitionist struggles in the United States. Ultimately, this chapter makes the case for the centrality of archives in facilitating a future free from prisons, policing, and the logics that sustain them.
