Abstract
Abstract When the 2003 invasion of Iraq toppled the Baʿth regime, various actors sought to gain control of the records and archives that had been under its control. The seizure of records was indicative of a new order of power that defined what was considered to be of value, who could access it, and how it could be deployed. As archives of immense historic significance were left to the mercy of the war’s destruction, the invading forces captured documents created by the former regime and subsequently displaced them. In addition to documents seized due to their presumed military value, two large collections were displaced through interventions that were justified in terms of efforts to preserve the Iraqi historical record. This chapter considers the impacts of conflict on records and archives and investigates the networks of power that led to the deterritorialization of Iraqi documentary heritage.
