Abstract
Abstract This chapter examines ways that religion plays a role in forging contemporary maternal identities and practices, attempting to isolate ways that Islamic interpretive paradigms have been mobilized to negotiate mothering in both Muslim-majority and Muslim-minority contexts. Focusing on maternal identities, including issues of infertility, the structure of Muslim households, the way that mothering practices or “motherwork” may differ in Muslim communities, and ways that Muslim motherhood and reproduction have been mobilized in decolonization and nationalist projects, this chapter also addresses how Muslim mothers have been both implicated in and identified as critical to the recent struggle against extremism.
