SommaireLa prépondérance des données indique qu’un traitement approprié rend rapidement non contagieuses les personnes atteintes de tuberculose (TB), voire au bout d’environ quelques jours suivant le début du traitement, même pour les cas initialement positifs au frottis.Les études indiquent également que le résultat du frottis d’expectorations et de la culture est moins révélateur de la contagiosité, une fois que les patients reçoivent un traitement efficace.Il subsiste cependant des incertitudes quant au moment précis où les personnes qui reçoivent un traitement antituberculeux ne sont plus du tout contagieuses.L’insistance concernant la négativation du frottis avant de lever les précautions contre la transmission par voie aérienne pourrait prolonger inutilement l’isolement, être préjudiciable au patient et avoir peu d’avantages sur le plan de la santé publique.Pour les personnes atteintes de tuberculose dont l’état de santé est suffisamment bon, un traitement ambulatoire et un isolement à domicile doivent être préférables à un isolement prolongé en milieu hospitalier. Cela permettra d’atténuer au moins certains des inconvénients de l’isolement prolongé.
