Abstract
Abstract This chapter compares two archival collections which provide different perspectives on a notorious South African story—the 1989 kidnapping and murder trial of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. The case was a political sensation, and its homophobic undertones polarized members of the anti-apartheid movement, many of whom were also part of the burgeoning gay rights movement. The responses to the trial are viewed through the holdings of two very different collections—the Truth and Reconciliation Commission archives, and those of Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action (GALA) a small activist archive in Johannesburg. This comparison asks whether reconciliation between archives is possible or desirable. It explores the significance of archives and archivists in facilitating complex enquiries into complicated histories and their capacity to contribute to the development of functioning democracies.
