À l’heure où l’assurance automobile est en crise dans plusieurs provinces canadiennes, le régime québécois se présente comme un modèle à suivre. Ce texte fait la genèse du régime québécois. Il démontre aussi que, malgré la remise en question du principe de l’assurance sans égard à la responsabilité, le régime étatique d’indemnisation du préjudice corporel compense pleinement les pertes éprouvées dans des accidents d’automobile par la très grande majorité des Québécois et que le régime privé de réparation des dommages matériels suivant le système d’indemnisation directe fondé sur la faute connaît une grande stabilité dont les automobilistes peuvent se réjouir.
