Abstract
While population-level evidence strongly influences policy and public health outcomes, it is not necessarily acceptable, appropriate, or responsive to people’s unique needs and relevant social and health care environments. Focusing on sexual health, this entry explores the potential of feminism and intersectionality to advance population health research and ultimately generate better evidence for effective policy and practice within diverse communities. Intersectionality helps to move away from categorical thinking about gender and support efforts to contextualize research on gender, social justice, and sexual health. This entry explores what feminism and intersectionality mean, why population health research has historically been afeminist, why we need these frameworks in population health research, and two applications of feminist and intersectional approaches to research on sexual health in the context of Canada and South Africa.
