Tyttöjen toimijuus ja uhrius seksistisen väkivallan ja välittämisen kietoumassa
Bibliographic record
Abstract

Girls’ agency and victimization in the entanglement of sexist violence and caringHelena LouhelaThe Finnish Journal of Youth Research(Nuorisotutkimus) Vol 41 (4), 58–70
Sexist violence against girls and women remains one of the biggest human rights violations in the world. Yet girls’ own experiences of sexist violence are not always in line with prevailing norms. As a result, girls’ opinions and feelings about their experiences of violence may be overlooked. This article explores how a young woman articulates and interprets her relationship with an adult man. The relationship involved physical and sexual violence, which is legally defined as child sexual abuse. The data includes four interviews conducted in the latter half of the 2010s when the interviewee was 15–19 years old. The analysis utilizes a theoretical reference framework to describe how feelings of caring and the contradictory alternation between agency and being silenced can be related to girls’ experiences of sexist violence. Many factors influence how girls relate to and define the sexist violence they experience. In addition, societal norms place conflicting expectations on girls to be both active agents and appropriate victims in violent situations. This research challenges the definition of the phenomenon of sexist violence and the agency of girls as a contextual and situational phenomenon. Based on this premise, a common terminology for the prevention and aftercare of sexist violence should be developed for young people and educators.
