Chalcogen Doping as a Promising Strategy to Improve the Thermochromic Properties of Vanadium Dioxide

Abstract
The metal–insulator transition (MIT) of VO 2 is accompanied by a significant change in its optical properties, making it a promising material for various types of applications. However, the high transition temperature T MIT limits its usefulness, while the effective reduction of T MIT via elemental doping is generally accompanied by a deterioration of the material’s advantageous thermochromic properties. We investigate chalcogen doping as a possible strategy to simultaneously lower T MIT and preserve the advantageous property changes across the VO 2 MIT from first principles. Our results suggest that O-substitutional S and Se doping can lower T MIT by approximately 35 K/at% while preserving an appreciable optical contrast at low dopant concentrations, which in the case of S also persists at high concentrations. A theoretical analysis of the formation thermochemistry of the doped compounds indicates that a synthesis under nonoxidative conditions is a promising avenue to obtain doped VO 2 with these desirable phase transition properties.
