Assessment of a DER Inverter Model for IEEE 1547 Ride-Through Requirements Using a Model in the Loop Testbed

Abstract
In recent years, multiple interconnection standards have been published to resolve issues related to inverter-based resources (IBRs). (i.e., IEEE 1547–2018, CSA C22.3 No. 9–2020, IEEE 2800–2022, etc.). One of the required needs for IBRs is to integrate voltage, frequency, phase change and ROCOF ride-through (RT) capabilities. Electromagnetic transient (EMT) models of IBRs that are compliant with RT requirements are necessary. Validated EMT models of IBRs will allow system planners, researchers, and grid operators to assess the impact of these resources properly and quickly for different interconnection jurisdictions. In this regard, a real-time grid code testing architecture, which includes the modeling of a solar inverter with RT functions, is presented. The IEEE 1547–2018 RT functions of the overall model are validated using the RT test procedures from IEEE 1547.1 standard. The results were also compared with an actual commercial PV inverter unit.
