Abstract
La procédure de mobilisation officielle par le tocsin est régulièrement détournée pour appeler à la révolte. Mais l’efficacité de cette initiative ne va pas de soi. Tout d’abord, sa réception concrète n’est pas évidente. Ensuite, en cas de réaction, une étape décisive reste à franchir : convaincre ceux qui sont accourus de s’engager dans la révolte. Le tocsin ouvre donc une phase d’intense politisation, qui reste souvent mal connue en raison de sources très allusives. Mais cela souligne les limites de la métaphore usuelle de la « contagion ». La nature exacte de la sonnerie fait elle-aussi question, car ses formes sont variées dans le temps et l’espace. On a même parfois du mal à déterminer si elle correspond bien à une sonnerie spécifique.
