Abstract
Cet ouvrage part à la fois du constat empirique que le dynamisme social et idéologique du nationalisme ne semble pas s’essouffler et du constat académique qu’il n’existe pas de synthèse récente sur le phénomène en français. Pour ces deux raisons, le projet ambitieux de Frédérick Guillaume Dufour d’une sociologie du nationalisme est le bienvenu. Plus précisément, le livre vise à présenter et examiner l’étude du nationalisme en sciences sociales. Pointant dès l’introduction les limites insurmontables des démarches objectivistes, l’auteur souligne à juste titre que la nation est mieux appréhendée comme une catégorie des pratiques sociales que comme une catégorie d’analyse (p. 21). S’il ancre sa réflexion dans celle des précurseurs de la sociologie et assume dans une large mesure une perspective wébérienne, il intègre aussi les courants les plus contemporains de la théorie sociologique.
