Abstract
Résumé Double révolution pour le pouvoir politique, comme pour la religion : Marianne émancipée de Dieu, et Dieu reprenant son statut d’objet de simple croyance spirituelle, sans domination temporelle. Progrès que représente cette séparation, qui permet l’affranchissement mutuel des religions et du pouvoir politique tout en promouvant une égalité authentique entre les divers croyants, les athées et les agnostiques. Telle est en résumé l’émancipation générale que réalise la séparation laïque de l’État et des Églises. L’ordre du religieux et l’ordre du politique s’affranchissent mutuellement, et se redéfinissent chacun dans son domaine propre. La loi du 9 décembre 1905 est bien une loi de séparation, correspondant à la formule de Victor Hugo : « L’Etat chez lui et l’Eglise chez elle » en 1850, dans son discours contre la loi Falloux qui organisait le contrôle du clergé sur l’école.
