Abstract
Résumé Avant même la séparation de l’Église et de l’État en 1905, l’enseignement est le premier chantier d’une laïcité qui se construit. La question de l’éducation est une illustration des rapports ambivalents qu’entretient le mouvement ouvrier avec la République « bourgeoise » et, plus largement, avec l’État. Il faut attendre en vérité les lendemains de la Première Guerre mondiale pour que les organisations syndicales et politiques du mouvement ouvrier achèvent leur « conversion » laïque, sans pour autant abandonner la préoccupation d’autonomie du social vis-à-vis de l’État.
