RésuméDepuis qu’au Moyen Âge, la culture de la soie a fait son entrée en Europe, les femmes ont joué un rôle central dans l’élevage des vers à soie et le tissage des fils de soie. Un rôle similaire existait en Asie et en Afrique du Nord – de la Chine à l’Iran et au Maroc – indépendamment de la religion et de la distribution sexuée des rôles. De plus, elles contrôlaient substantiellement les bénéfices dérivés de la fabrication de la soie. Les hommes tentèrent à plusieurs reprises de maîtriser le processus de production de la soie, mais les femmes réussirent à conserver leur rôle central jusqu’au xixe siècle. En plus de la transmission d’un savoir technique sophistiqué dans les lignées de femmes, incluant les « secrets » concernant la santé des vers à soie et la protection diabolique, un certain nombre de rituels et de croyances en la capacité exclusive des corps féminins à couver les œufs des vers leur donna la main sur les hommes. Beaucoup de ces croyances pourraient avoir migré vers l’ouest en partant de la Chine, suivant la progression de la culture de la soie elle-même.
