This work presents a comparative analysis between an AlNiCo (Non-rare-earth magnet) and a series-hybrid permanent magnet (PM) variable flux motor (VFM) which has both an AlNiCo and a rare-earth magnet. The AlNiCo VFM utilizes a spoke type rotor and specially positioned flux barriers. The series hybrid VFM (SHVFM) utilizes a standard V-shaped rotor with AlNiCo and rare-earth PMs. A detailed electromagnetic finite element (FE) analysis is presented and validated through a set of experiments for measuring the key characteristics of each machine. Due to the virtual remagnetization (VD) effects, the SHVFM offers improved de/remagnetization characteristics along with improved overall torque density. The findings reveal that the series-hybrid VFMs are subject to high risk of rare-earth PM demagnetization. In addition, the re/demagnetization performance is highly related to the residual flux density of the rare-earth PM in SHVFM.
