La plupart des sources foncières médiévales décrivent des tenures paysannes et non des exploitations. Ce n’est pas le cas de l’extente de Féternes, en Chablais, une enquête réalisée, sans doute en 1278, pour le comte de Savoie. Du fait que les tenanciers y déclarent les terres qu’ils tiennent du comte mais aussi des autres seigneurs, ce document nous donne à voir plusieurs dizaines d’exploitations véritables dont la superficie peut être évaluée et la composition analysée. L’extente révèle également une structure foncière complexe où la propriété éminente paraît plus dispersée que la propriété utile ; où l’indivision entre frères concerne plus de la moitié des parcelles et où, enfin, percent de façon précoce des stratégies paysannes de spécialisations tournées vers l’élevage.
