of distraction (e.g., behavioural distraction), emotion-focused avoidance (e.g., castrophizing), and approach coping (e.g., information seeking).Current levels of IBS symptoms (e.g., pain, diarrhea, bloating) were assessed using a checklist developed by Blanchard and colleagues.Results: A hierarchical multiple regression, with age and gender entered into the first block and the psychological factors entered into the second block, was conducted to examine the role of these factors in predicting symptom severity.The first step of the model was non-significant.The second step of the model was significant with an adjusted R squared of .432,F(7.19) = 3.82, p < .01.The only significant predictors of symptom severity scores were use of emotion-focused avoidance and approach coping.Anxiety and depression were not predictive of symptom severity scores. Conclusion:The results of the current study indicate that, while anxiety and depression are commonly associated with IBS, these psychological variables were not predictive of symptom severity among adolescents with IBS.Coping strategies, on the other hand, did appear to play an important role in predicting symptom severity.Future research is needed to further examine the role of coping strategies in adolescent IBS.
