Abstract
The diary of Edward Feild, second Anglican Bishop of Newfoundland, provides the new bishop's private reflections upon leaving his home in England and travelling for the first time to North America.Apart from any apprehensions he expresses about his new mission in life, we find him preoccupied not only with Christian education but with the arrangement of church buildings and church ritual as it was practised in the colonies, as well as with the need for building in St. John's a cathedral, for which the foundation stone had been laid in 1843.The diary gives us insights into his thoughts as a Tractarian -a follower of the Oxford Movement, begun in 1833 by clergy at Oxford University to renew the Church of England by reviving Catholic doctrines and rituals.I am grateful to the McCord Museum for permission to publish the diary as it appears in MS M2297.More particular details concerning Feild's plans for a cathedral are shown in his correspondence with the Rev.
