Abstract
Paru chez Ambert en 1902, L’Élu d’Achille Essebac est un roman méconnu des dix-neuviémistes, dont l’intérêt n’est pas négligeable en histoire des représentations des homosexualités masculines et de la photographie. Représentant le fonctionnement d’un atelier photographique homoérotique, il illustre non seulement des pratiques artistiques et sexuelles occultées, mais aussi la perception qu’en ont certains écrivains décadents. Dans une approche intermédiatique, entre littérature et photographie, je montrerai combien ces pratiques ont pu s’inscrire dans des dynamiques prostitutionnelles, au point d’attester l’existence d’un proxénétisme photographique homosexuel. Face au photographe, ainsi qu’au client-spectateur, qui l’objectivent tour à tour, le prostitué-modèle est un personnage intéressant pour étudier ces questions de sexe (de classe et de race) à l’époque de la reproductibilité technique et d’un gain de visibilité des homosexualités masculines.
