Deux romans publiés en 2021 et 2022 aux éditions Verdier, Poison d’or de Jean-Michel Mariou et Partout le feu d’Hélène Laurain, illustrent bien le phénomène en hausse d’une appropriation des codes du polar par une littérature dite « blanche ». Les deux textes prennent place dans des collections de grands formats associées à l’invention formelle et abritent un mélange générique. La chronique historique documentée s’invite un chapitre sur deux dans le roman de Jean-Michel Mariou pour retracer, à coup de nombreuses citations d’articles de presse et d’archives, l’histoire réelle de la mine d’or de Salsigne dans l’Aude aux xixe et xxe siècles. Le récit d’Hélène Laurain – en vers libres – fraye parfois avec le poème lyrique épousant la mélodie d’un flux de conscience dont les réflexions portent essentiellement sur les activités à impact environnemental ayant cours en Lorraine, surtout celles liées aux déchets nucléaires. Pourtant, l’un et l’autre des romans abritent une fiction qui les inscrit dans le genre du noir : un crime originel, une enquête policière, une traque. C’est cette hybridation entre documentation environnementale et fiction policière qui nous intéresse ici. Quelles relations s’instaurent entre les deux régimes discursifs et comment le documentaire environnemental prend appui sur la narration criminelle, tire parti de sa contiguïté et puise une fécondité écopoétique dans ses structures ? L’article montre que Jean-Michel Mariou et Hélène Laurain adossent des études de cas liées à une pollution des sols au paradigme indiciaire de l’enquête criminelle afin de tirer de celui-ci une force transgressive et d’inviter à penser le crime contre la terre et la vertu créatrice des cadavres.
