Abstract
This important and groundbreaking book provides a new consideration of the seventeenth-century architectural projects of the Villa y Corte of Madrid, a designation which even today signifies the complex relationship between the municipality and the royal court.Jess Escobar bases his interpretation of buildings, spaces, and the urban environment on extensive archival research in order to "illuminate the ways in which artists, historians, and court image makers [] came to use the arts to forge consensus among subjects from near and far about the magnificence of Spanish Habsburg rule" (6).The result is a fascinating study of the nuances of architectural spaces, how they were used and experienced, and the co-construction of Habsburg and madrileo identity.Escobar begins with an overview of the historical situation, including the major figures, entities, and architectural reference points, specifically the projects associated with Philip II, including El Escorial and interventions at the Real Palacio de Madrid, before exploring the mythmaking power of the urban city in chapter 1.The publication of the first map of Madrid occurred nearly simultaneously with the first official history of the city, enabling Escobar to weave together visual and textual evidence, including city views and guidebooks, into a rich analysis of the official construction of Madrid as a glorious city, the capital and epitome of an equally glorious empire.This analysis provides a conceptual framework for understanding the power of place-making that Escobar invokes throughout the remainder of the text.Chapters 2 through 5 each focus on a specific space: chapter 2 studies the royal palace and its spatial organization, chapter 3 the court prison, chapter 4 the town hall, and chapter 5 returns to the royal palace but with attention to the later interventions of Mariana of Austria.Although few of the spaces studied by Escobar remain, the use of detailed ground plans, both historical and newly created, along with architectural models, painted depictions, historical maps, and contemporary views enable the reader to envision the architectural environment of the seventeenth century.Escobar then overlays historical descriptions and documentary evidence to populate the spaces with contemporary persons engaging in specific types
